Metrolina Plastic Surgery's Dr. Edward Bednar Has An Eye For Aesthetics
by Pat MacEnulty
COSMETIC SURGERY IS AN ART FORM DEDICATED TO THE AESTHETICS of the human face and form, and yet we don’t usually expect to find true artistic talent in a doctor — unless he happens to be Dr. Edward Bednar of Metrolina Plastic Surgery. One of the first things patients notice at Metrolina Plastic Surgery is the doctor’s original artwork. “Dr. Bednar was a North American champion in wildfowl carving,” says Metrolina patient coordinator Sylvia Gorman. “He also sculpts and paints beautiful landscapes and still lifes.”
Dr. Bednar’s artistic sensibilities carry through from his paintings, carvings and sculpture to his skills as a surgeon. Having practiced in Charlotte for almost 20 years, his talents can be observed in the many “before” and “after” photos of patients. “Dr. Bednar applies his artistic eye to surgery,” says Gorman. “He spends an hour to an hour-and-a-half in the initial patient consultation. He takes the time to find out exactly what each person wants, then matches them with the best treatment to achieve those goals.” Dr. Bednar is certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
Procedures performed by Metrolina Plastic Surgery include brow lifts, contour threading and eyelid surgery; abdominal etching, tummy tucks and liposuction; surgery of the nose, chin, cheeks and jaw; face lifts, Botox® and Juvederm™; gynecomastia (male breast reduction); laser resurfacing of the skin; and breast lifts, augmentation and reduction. Gorman notes that Metrolina Plastic Surgery offers more than one option for breast augmentation. “We have both tear-drop and textured round implants, so we can provide women with more choices,” says Gorman. “Dr. Bednar has an eye that helps him determine the perfect shape for each woman’s body.”
Facing The Future “As we age, facial skin becomes loose and begins to sag,” Dr. Bednar explains. “Metrolina Plastic Surgery is devoted to cosmetic surgery and non-invasive cosmetic procedures that can help turn back the clock. People are excited about things like contour threads because they can eliminate the need for a facelift for the time being, but many non-inva-sive procedures are temporary, so some patients still opt for a facelift to get a permanent result.”
Gorman notes that the type of procedure Dr. Bednar recommends depends on the specific goals of each patient. “Facelifts address the neck and cheeks. Mini-facelifts and contour threads mainly address the cheeks,” she says. “Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids, as well as puffy bags below the eyes that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and can even interfere with vision.” Gorman maintains that after a facelift by Dr. Bednar, women generally look 10 to 15 years younger, but thanks to his artistry, they still look like themselves. “He keeps it very natural,” she says.
In addition to surgical procedures, Metrolina Plastic Surgery offers 10 forms of skincare treatments to combat the effects of acne, aging, sun damage, enlarged pores and skin laxity. Most of these treatments require minimal recovery time, and can take as little as 30 minutes to perform. “It’s a quick way to get a youthful glow to your skin,” Gorman says.
While women are the primary patients at Metrolina Plastic Surgery, an increasing number of men are signing up for treatments to enhance their looks as well. Many fitness-conscious men are opting for abdominal etching, a procedure that involves a form of liposuction/sculpting to give the abs that sleek, “six-pack” appearance.
Full-Service Facility Metrolina Plastic Surgery is a certified outpatient center and abides by strict rules established by the American Association For Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAA). Procedures requiring general anesthesia are performed on-site in a fully-accredited surgical suite on an outpatient basis.
“While we meet very rigorous standards, we still want to make our patients feel comfortable,” Gorman says. “Our staff is friendly and very professional, and our patients know exactly what they are getting when they come to Dr. Bednar. He’s easy to understand and doesn’t use jargon when he’s explaining the procedures. He listens, and he’s very honest.” TCW Reprinted from Today's Charlotte Women magazine
